Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy
Role:
Designer
Working remotely with the Compost Creative team based in London, I designed and developed the graphics package for the studio’s winning pitch for the graphics in the film. Directed by Emmy-winning writer and filmmaker Nic Stacey, Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy (working title Wasters) pulls back the curtain on the world’s top brands, exposing everything from billion-dollar marketing machines to the design ploys and psychological tricks intended to manipulate consumer behaviour on a global scale. The film takes audiences on a wild ride through the dirty world beneath the gloss and glam. It was great to be approached by my old bosses at Compost for the job. They felt the bold, playful and subversive designs would be right up my street - how right they were!
Design Reel
overall style
A selection of my styleframes depicting in-situ adverts, billboards, the repeated instruction to BUY, FORGET, BUY MORE. ‘The Playbook’ on industry dodgy tricks for success, plus a sinister AI assistant called Sasha.
Title Cards
I created bold, bright title cards with a big simple message like the instruction to buy (at the time the working tile was Wasters). I had the name flickering through different iterations of colour and language to emphasise the relentless global nature of these buying campaigns. The two-tone split / distortion effect plays with the idea of the shiny marketing facade flickering to reveal the reality beneath.
Interviews
My designs for interviews and talking heads with graphics overlays, continuing the bold, block colour style.
MESSAGING & PHONE GRAPHICS
My styleframes showing how digital messages, ads, notifications, alerts etc can be placed in-shot with devices, melding with footage.
